VALUE 
This small scale project was bid in early 2010 with a cost of $142/sf for new construction & $17/sf for renovations.  Life-cycle cost efficiency was considered in the selection of all building systems. Finish materials were selected for durability & ease of maintenance, especially in high contact areas. Each of the Learning Resource Centers is located to allow after-hours community use in this underserved part of the county. 
 
PLANNING
The Bond Program launched with a design charette attended by School Board, Administrators, Campus Focus Groups and parents.  We educated the client on design process and gathered a binding consensus.   As the design developed, we would meet with Owner to test the validity of the solutions.   The linear process of gathering information, compiling it into a design package and reviewing with Owner was repeated often during design.  In each phase and through completion of contract documents, we posted the package to our FTP site and set meeting times to consult with campus focus groups.
 
DESIGN
Aesthetically we focused on blending into the surrounding and giving the rural community a fresh modern feel.  Our approach was to create community gathering spaces and to preserve the atmosphere of each campus.  This is a community that had not seen a bond pass in a few decades.  They desired a lot of community function in addition to those required by district.  Our plans employed high building efficiency to give this district every bit of value within the bond program.  Local authorities were enlisted to review design to add safety.  
 
EDUCATIONAL APPROPRIATENESS 
The design of learning spaces was based on the District’s desire to have light & soaring architectural volumes to stimulate inquisitive minds. The high school LRC/technology center was positioned on the campus to provide a clearly identifiable entry point to a previously haphazard site. Technology was made transparent using wireless & hard-wired solutions. Safety & security were addressed through access control & CCTV surveillance integrated into the data network.
 
INNOVATION 
This project for a small Texas school district was delivered by an integrated team of District Leadership, Program Manager, Construction Manager, & Architect. Even with a mid project change in school administration, the project progressed smoothly through the collaborative efforts of those involved. An historic school campus has been unified with a complementary design, while maintaining an economical construction cost. 
 
SUSTAINABILITY
The site was developed to improve existing drainage infrastructure & reduce the impact on adjacent sites. Low flow fixtures with motion sensing valves reduce water consumption. HVAC systems utilize high efficiency outside air heat exchangers to improve indoor environmental air quality. The design uses daylighting techniques to minimize artificial lighting during peak hours. Single-wythe 8” brick walls minimize materials & incorporate thermal mass qualities. An efficient floor plan maximizes usable space by reducing circulation.
